I only have one but I love it. It is the Sacred Heart but there is barbed wire instead of the thorns around the heart. I got it at a time when I had suffered a major career setback and felt that my heart needed protection. You can only see it if I wear a shirt that doesn't cover it; it's on my back between my shoulders.

I don't think tattoos are a bad thing, and I don't think people who have tattoos are necessarily bad people. To me, it depends on the content of the tattoo and the heart of the person wearing it.

I don't think they're immoral, I just don't care for most of them aesthetically. I also question the wisdom of getting a tattoo of something that's a fad or otherwise meaningless. On the other hand, I don't have a problem getting one that's related to something that was a significant part of your life, for example: the names of your kids, the slogan/mascot of your army unit, or like my boss, the logo of the company you founded and have run for 15 years.

I must admit that I'm not too keen on tattoos. I know there are a lot of factors why people get them. I've learned long ago not to judge for those that get them. It's a personal choice, not one for me. Besides, I'm too chicken! Remember throughout life people change and sometimes rather dramatically so. I've talked to a lot of people who regret getting them. They were "cool" and meaningful at the time but have lost that meaning over the years. They may fade and remind of a time when they were someone else.

For instance, my step-daughter (19 yo) and a bunch of her friends were considering tattoos in memory of a high school buddy that died in a car accident. Several of them, including a couple girls got one with this guys name/date of birth and death and a deer head (he was an avid hunter). These girls were 18 or 19 and now will carry this with them for life. What happens when these girls are 30 or 40, they've gotten married, had families, etc. They have a permanent memorial of some dead guy from high school. It's not that he doesn't have a special place in their heart but life goes on. People change and tattoos often fade into a dull reminder of something that had meaning at one time. It also seems like a constant reminder of his death instead of a celebration of his life.

Another example: I knew a girl in college who got a tattoo of a dragonfly on her right shoulder blade. It was pretty and artistically done. Dragonflies were her trademark in a sense. But after some years they lost their appeal and the beautiful tattoo faded. Last I heard she was thinking of having it removed but considering the pain and cost involved.

For me, a tattoo has to mean something for it to be cool. Mine means something, even if only to me. I was 38 when I got mine and I had talked about it for about 5 years before I got it.

My husband has 3 of them. We have custody of my 13-month-old cousin; he got the baby's name tattooed over the North Star, so the baby could always find his way home to us if he ever got lost. (He's Navy.) That one made me cry. The other two I didn't much care for, but I have to admit the detail on one of them is absolutely incredible. He talked about one of them for about 13 years before he actually did it.

The baby's birth mom has a lot of poorly done jailhouse tattoos including "outlaw" on her bicep. We live in Florida, so almost every time she goes out someone sees that tattoo because it's too hot to cover it up most of the time.

I was really fortunate that I had a good tattoo artist who talked to me about good placement and the proper amount of detail. I looked at his tattoos before I sat down in the chair. If he had said no, I would have walked out. I'm thinking most people probably don't put as much thought into it as I did, though ...

Because you don't want anybody to see it. It has personal meaning to you, and you don't care if anybody else sees it. Just knowing it is there is comforting/encouraging/etc. Not everybody gets a tattoo as something to show off.

Exactly. I have two tattoos, but the one I have on the back of my left shoulder has a very deep and personal meaning for me. Its not about showing it off to people, though I don't mind if they see it when I'm out swimming or something. Its there for my own personal reasons as a reminder of someone in my past.

Well i dont believe its okay to mark up your body with tatoos, if your a christian your body is God's Temple which he dwells in plus God said not to mark up your body, Leviticus 19:28 says " Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tatoos on yourselves. I am the Lord." This isnt referring to those who already have them and did not know, but as a christian we shouldn't continue to partake in it. This is just my opinion but I did back it up with a scritpure!

God also said not to eat pork or shellfish. Do you do either? Also, make sure all the clothes you have on right now are made from only one kind of fabric, or you'll be disobeying the Law.
Personally, I choose to live under grace, not legalism.

These are holiness codes given to the Jews and are not relevant today. Jesus came to the world to save it, and he said "follow Me", and he never talked about tattoos. The only reference to tattoos in the Bible is the one you quoted, and in context you can tell it has nothing to do with us gentiles today.

I agree with this! I personally don't want one, but I have friends who have them and it doesn't bother me, I think it's all about your personal convictions.

There are several on-fire, wonderful christian guys and girls who have them, it doesn't make them bad people, just people with ink in their skin.

Me either, even though I was in the Navy over 9 years. Just not my thing.

However, I really admire, love, and respect my SIL who is a MSGT in the Air Force and who has quite a few very nice tats.

It seems that everybody wants to quote Leviticus as a scriptual basis for saying tattoos are wrong. A complete reading of the Book of Leviticus(an interesting read BTW) will show otherwise. The children of Isreal had been exposed to pagan practices while in captivity. These practices included the mourning rituals of cutting the hair in a bowl style cut, cutting the beard in a certain way and cutting the flesh as a way of mourning the dead. They had been free from this for soe time but were once again exposed to it by the surrounding pagans. God was telling them not to fall back into pagan practices and doing these things as a mark for the dead.

I'm definitely not a fan of tatoos. Every time I see a young kid come into our office with a visible tattoo I have to wonder if he or she is going to regret it sometime down the line.

I appreciate the "body is God's temple perspective from ChristFollower21:

quote:

But I struggle with the application of Leviticus 19 specifically because we clearly don't apply all of Leviticus 19. For example:

Lev 19:19 - Do not mate different kinds of animals. Do not plant your field with two kinds of seed. Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material.

Lev 19:27 - Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.

It seems clear from the OT to the NT that there are some restrictions that we no longer adhere to because they were culturally specific, while others were reinforced in the NT and are generally regarded as binding for believers.

Yes, He did change that in the New Testament - just liked the command to follow the Law was changed in the New Testament. Quoting Leviticus to prove something is wrong won't work for all Christians. Yes, some Christians still choose to follow the Law as a way of honoring God. That's their decision, and I don't want this thread to turn into another discussion on that subject. I just know there is no command in the New Testament for Christians to keep the Law, so I have not been commanded by God to not get a tattoo.

It depends on the person, the culture, and the tattoo.

This from ABC News tonight: 40% of people 18-39 have a tattoo.

Getting a tattoo in a mall...definitely a sin.
